British Gambling Helpline Reports Record Number of People Seeking Treatment

Calling the helpline (AI)

The British Gambling helpline GamCare has reported a record number of calls resulting in patient intake for gambling addiction treatment services. GamCare is a UK non-profit organization that provides free support for anyone affected by gambling-related harms. It operates all throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

According to GamCare reports, it made 996 referrals to treatment in January 2026, a 48% increase from the 674 amount from a year ago in January 2025.

GamCare CEO Victoria Corbishley had a positive view of what this means:

More people affected by gambling harms are choosing to start treatment. The National Gambling Helpline is a 24/7, confidential route to support, and our advisers rapidly connect people with free, specialist help across Great Britain. That first conversation remains the crucial turning point.

Rising Intakes is a Mixed Signal

GamCare promotes the increase in numbers as a positive sign that people are more open to accepting treatment. The company says that the proportion of target calls converting into treatment has increased rapidly, which it believes means that serious progress is being made on reducing gambling harms.

But the increase in people seeking help for gambling harm could also have a darker undertone. An increase in intakes could mean that people struggling with gambling are showing increased willingness to get help. On the other hand, it could simply mean there are more people struggling. The UK has made several policy changes in recent years aimed at curbing gambling addiction, such as a stake limit on fixed-odds betting terminals. However, the jury is still out on whether those changes have had the desired impact.

The difficulty in interpreting the statistics is one that’s familiar to medical researchers. An increase in the number of cases of a certain condition could mean any number of things. It could mean that the disease is becoming more prevalent, but it could also be that doctors are getting better at diagnosing it or that more people are getting tested. It could equally be a combination of all three factors.

GamCare Messaging vs The Power of Gambling Ads

Gambling has become a part of daily life for many in the UK, particularly among sports fans. As in the U.S., the ubiquitous nature of advertising is often cited as a factor.

A University of Sheffield study found that gambling ads during sporting events increased betting frequency by 24%. Meanwhile, a recent Irish study said that shielding kids from gambling is more difficult now than ever.

GamCare was founded in 1997 and has been a part of the British consciousness for some time. If GamCare were a new company that spurred the increase in those seeking help, then it would be more likely that the numbers are due to better messaging.

While subtle changes in GamCare’s efforts likely do marginally increase the numbers, the sheer breadth of betting appears to be the more determining factor in an increase as significant as 48%.
