A poker-themed Korean drama, The Dealer, is coming to Netflix. The series will follow a casino dealer who enters a Texas hold’em poker tournament after being scammed out of her deposit for a home.

K-Drama superstar Jung So Min is the top candidate to play the lead role, while renowned Korean director Choi Young Hwan is tabbed to direct the project.

The show’s hook describes the premise:

Where dreams and hopes become reality. Oceanland, a newly opened casino in Korea that allows entry to locals! However, behind its glamorous exterior, the world of the casino is a battlefield against troublesome customers and lingering spirits.

One twist in the show’s premise is that the dealer can detect lies when she consumes alcohol. That would presumably aid her in the poker tournament. Poker Face on Peacock utilized a similar premise. In that show, the lead character can also detect when others are lying, leading to one poker-themed episode at the show’s inception.

Poker seems to be making a bit of a pop culture comeback, having a thematic presence in several recent shows and movies. The poker movie Down to the Felt was one such example.

It remains to be seen how much of the K-Drama show will focus on events at the casino. How often will poker take center stage over the course of the 11-episode season?

Poker in Korea

A Netflix K-Drama presents a significant opportunity to introduce poker to a Korean audience. The game still hasn’t quite exploded in popularity there despite a strong gaming culture.

Still, positive signs exist. Jeju hosts the Triton High Roller Poker Series, and a recent smaller-stakes event there did solid numbers. PokerStars has also run events there as part of its lower-stakes live series.

Abroad, the number of Korean players has slowly increased, with several making runs in the World Series of Poker main event in recent years.

Daehyung Lee made some waves in 2025 by becoming the first Korean since 2003 to make the WSOP main event final table. Unfortunately for Lee, a cooler eliminated him on the very first hand.
