Poker player Chau Shing “Andrew” Lam is in big trouble with his Manhattan residency condominium building after breaking the no-smoking policy with years of excessive marijuana use, according to many of his neighbors.
Lam’s unit, which he bought for $4.15 million in 2022, at 368 Third Ave. in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan, was turned into a haven for marijuana smoking, much to the dismay of his neighbors within the building. The condominium’s board is filing a lawsuit directly against Lam for violating policy. The lawsuit urges a judge to declare Lam in violation of the building rules.
Lam ran up fines totaling over $87,000 for repeated violations and his refusal to change his ways. In addition to the smoking violations, residents allege Lam often throws loud parties that last until the wee hours of the morning and owns a dog that barks for many hours of the day. Lam has ignored these fines.
The board has punished Lam before. In 2024, the New York City native was stripped of certain building privileges, including the gym, laundry room, common roof terrace, and party room.
Enough Smoke to Damage Air Quality
Neighbors in the building complained that Lam and his guests smoke nearly every day. The smell reportedly permeated the building’s hallways and neighboring homes. The smoke was so bad that the air quality received the same classification as air during extreme wildfire events. Breathing in that air is equal to inhaling seven to 10 cigarettes.
One of the neighbors in the lawsuit said that the smoke was greatly damaging to their sick 12-year-old child with a respiratory condition.
Lam wrote to the board in an email to stop harassing him about his smoking behavior, which he said is totally legal and that he is well within his rights to do so. He argues that marijuana is legal in NYC and he owns the condo:
Hi, can you please stop making these non sense [sic], I’ve been smoking here the past two year [sic] and the building knows and didn’t say anything about it, and more people smoke in the buildings.
And after I talk to my neighbor I tried to stop and after our last conversation on the 10th I haven’t even smoke in the apartment, I have weed kept and carried, but that totally fine it my right to do that. So please stop.
International Poker Resume
Lam, sometimes listed in poker results as Andrew, travels internationally for poker. His career results do not go back very far, only dating back to April of 2025. He has a couple of cashes from Tunica, Mississippi, while the rest come from European Poker Tour events, from Paris to Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
In total, he has almost $130,000 in winnings from nine cashes. His most recent results come from outside of the Card Player archives during a stint in South Korea in mid-July.
