Most Popular Omaha Poker Games

There are actually several forms of Omaha, all of which are equally fascinating. Let’s take a closer look and learn more about these games.

Pot Limit Omaha (PLO)

If someone is talking about playing Omaha poker online, they’re most probably referring to PLO. It’s the second most popular form of poker behind Texas Hold’em, and the two games are closely related.

Omaha uses the same structure as Hold’em, with an initial pre-flop betting round that requires two forced bets – the small and big blinds. Three community cards are then dealt, followed by the turn and river cards, with an extra betting round after each.

The key difference to keep in mind when learning how to play Omaha poker is that each player gets four cards. When forming your five-card poker hand, you must use exactly two from your own hole cards and three of the community cards.

As the name suggests, PLO features a Pot Limit structure. This interesting setup ensures that pot sizes can’t get out of hand early on. Towards the end of a hand, though, you could easily find yourself with most, if not all, of your chips at risk.

Omaha Hi/Lo or Eight or Better (PLO8)

Omaha Eight or Better, often called Omaha Hi-Lo or PLO8, uses the same basic rules but splits every pot in two. One half of the pot is reserved for the strongest hand, as usual. But there’s a second half of the pot potentially up for grabs for whoever has the lowest qualifying hand.

A low hand is any hand from five to eight-high, and straights and flushes won’t count against you. That’s why A-2-3-4-5 is the best possible low – it’s treated as five-high, not a straight.

If the board is made up of high cards – nine or bigger – it might not be possible to make a low. If that’s the case, the best high hand takes the entire pot.

The Hi/Lo variant is available at all of the best Omaha poker sites. It’s a very strategic game, and you’ll have to think more carefully about your hand selection. It offers more opportunities to pick up smaller pots, but it’s also a high-variance game.

Five Card Omaha (PLO5)

In recent years, this particular PLO poker variant has become extremely popular, especially online. It uses the same setup as standard Omaha, except players are dealt five cards per hand, rather than the traditional four.

This additional card increases the number of possible hand combinations. But while you’re more likely to stumble onto a good hand, that’s also true for your opponents. You’ll need to be extremely disciplined in your PLO5 hand selection.

You’ll find 5-Card Omaha at most of our recommended PLO poker sites, including CoinPoker, ACR Poker, and Black Chip Poker.

Six Card Omaha (PLO6)

Similar to PLO5, this variant of traditional Omaha involves two extra cards in your starting hand, rather than one. The sheer number of potential hand permutations is massive, resulting in a more chaotic and action-packed game.

Although Five Card Omaha has become a fairly serious game, available at many leading poker sites, PLO6 isn’t as popular yet. But you can find tables on some of the best sites.

No Limit Omaha (NLO)

What if you could play Omaha poker online for real money without any betting restrictions? Welcome to No Limit Omaha, where players are free to bet as much as they have in front of them, at any time.

Much like No Limit Hold’em, you need nerves of steel to play NLO. Putting all of your chips on the line is brave, even if you’ve a good chance of winning. But doing so on a bluff is extremely risky, especially in a game like Omaha, where so many hands are always possible.

This makes for a more psychological game than Fixed or Pot Limit Omaha, where it’s much harder to be bullied off the best hand. Some sites in the US don’t even offer NLO games, since it’s not the most popular variant.

Some of the best Omaha poker sites offer a PLO-NLO hybrid game where the pot-limit preflop rules are combined with no-limit postflop rules.

Fixed Limit Omaha (FLO)

Since Omaha is a pretty volatile game, many players prefer a Fixed Limit betting structure. Unlike big bet games, it’s much harder to lose large sums of money playing this way. So, if you’re looking to reduce swings, FLO might be the game for you.

For the first two betting rounds, Fixed Limit Omaha players can only bet the size of the designated small blind. On the turn and river, this limit increases to the size of the big blind, which is usually double. For example, a $1/$2 FLO game has small and big blinds of $1 and $2, respectively.

You also can’t have more than four bets per round.

Unlike NLO, all of the best Omaha poker sites offer Fixed Limit games since it’s the next most common way to play, behind PLO.

Payment Options at the Best Omaha Poker Sites

You can’t play Pot Limit Omaha online without a way to add funds to your account. What’s more, if you win, you’re going to want to get your hands on that cash right away.

In this section, we’ll discuss the most common deposit and withdrawal methods for Omaha online poker in the US.

Cards

Debit and credit cards are the most popular way to fund your Omaha poker game online, though they’re not necessarily the best option.

Cards are definitely among the most secure ways to deposit and withdraw, considering the long history of brands like Mastercard and Visa. But it can take up to a week to receive a withdrawal.

Cryptocurrency

All of our featured brands offer at least four major tokens: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, and Litecoin. However, many top crypto poker sites offer dozens of options, each providing an additional layer of anonymity compared to most payment methods.

Best of all, though, cryptocurrency withdrawals at best Omaha poker sites rarely take longer than 48 hours. Sites generally process your payment requests within a couple of hours.

eWallets

Payment processors like Neteller and Skrill have been processing online gambling transactions for around a quarter of a century. But newer brands, like Luxon Pay, are just as reliable.

Some eWallets provide a secure and convenient place to store your Omaha poker bankroll online. The downside is that not many gaming sites accept eWallets for banking.

Other Payment Methods

Depending on your chosen site, you might also encounter the following payment methods:

  • Vouchers: The likes of Neosurf allow you to fund your account with a physical or online voucher.
  • Prepaid cards: Powered by reputable names like Visa and Mastercard, these options offer a more responsible way to gamble, along with additional protection against theft.
  • Checks: Yes, some sites still use checks, and they can be a good way to withdraw funds. It can take more than a week for the courier to deliver it to your door, though.

Available Bonuses at Omaha Poker Sites

Now let’s look at the various poker bonuses and promotions at the best PLO poker sites. Keep your eyes peeled for these potentially lucrative offers and be sure to cash in.

Welcome Bonus

Whenever you sign up to play Omaha poker online, there should always be some kind of reward. Brands understand just how competitive the industry is, and they try to catch our attention with a welcome bonus.

The most common is a deposit bonus, but you can also get free tournament entry tickets or even a no-deposit bonus. As the name suggests, these bonuses are for first-time players only.

Match Deposit Bonus

This type of bonus is tied to a real-money deposit. The bonus amount, in most cases, will match what you deposit. Bovada, for instance, matches all first-time deposits with a 100% bonus worth up to $500.

But this won’t be a lump sum – you’ll need to play games like Pot Limit Omaha to release it, with sites releasing bonuses incrementally based on how much rake you generate.

While 100% (or more) matches are usually reserved for welcome bonuses, some Omaha poker sites also have reload bonuses, with a match offer of 10% to 50%.

No Deposit Bonus

This type of promotion is becoming increasingly difficult to find, as it gives you the chance to win something for nothing. Simply create your new account, log in, and start playing using the free bonus funds.

Any winnings from a no-deposit promo are usually paid back to your bonus wallet, rather than as real money. In that case, wagering requirements will apply before you can withdraw.

Rakeback

This is essentially a percentage refund of the rake and tournament entry fees you pay within a specific timeframe. It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing Pot Limit Omaha or Seven-Card Stud – if you pay rake, you’ll get a rebate.

Most sites offer direct rakeback deals. CoinPoker is by far the best in this area, offering all players the chance to earn a 33% rakeback rebate.

Tournament Tickets

Some offshore poker sites give players free access to tournaments. We’re not talking about freerolls, in which nobody else pays to enter, either. We’re talking about tournaments where you can make real money.

Instead of paying the buy-in, you simply use the provided tournament ticket, and you’re ready to take your seat. Whatever you win from the event is yours.

VIP Rewards

Some of the leading sites with Omaha poker online for real money give regular players loyalty points, which can be traded in for other rewards. There’s often a tier structure in place, too. So, the more points you accumulate, the higher you’ll rise through the ranks.

The Ignition poker room, for example, uses what it calls “Ignition Miles.” You can cash 2,500 of these in for $1, with no wagering requirements attached.

Best Omaha Poker Sites – Our Verdict

Playing Omaha poker online is quite different from Hold’em. It offers a unique challenge, despite the game’s structural similarities, with higher levels of variance and, more often than not, increased action.

Whether you’re completely new to playing Omaha poker online or a veteran of many years, CoinPoker is definitely worth a look. Here’s why.

  • Good Mix of Games – It gets great traffic for Omaha in both cash games and tournaments. Plus, it has plenty of action for 5-Card tables as well.
  • Incredible Direct Rakeback Deal – As long as you use the site’s proprietary cryptocurrency token (CHP) to play, you’ll earn 33% rakeback.
  • Fast and Secure Payment Processing – With a number of different crypto options, CoinPoker offers some of the quickest withdrawals online for your Omaha winnings.
  • Stakes to Suit All Bankrolls – Rail the highest stakes Omaha games, frequented by the likes of Tony G, grind the $0.01/$0.02 tables, or play anything in between.
