An investigation is underway after a 70-year-old trespassing casino guest died in police custody in San Pablo, California. The individual was a citizen of nearby El Cerrito and was reportedly resisting authorities at 10:44 p.m. on Saturday night.
The man was detained in handcuffs as he was physically resisting while security tried to remove him from the San Pablo Lytton Casino. The San Pablo Police Department reported in a post on Facebook that its officers did not use any force during the man’s arrest. They then drove him to the Contra Costa County jail for booking.
While being held at the jail, the man had a medical emergency. Jail staff and firefighters from the nearby department rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late. He was declared dead despite efforts from medical staff.
The case will now be investigated in conjunction with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and the San Pablo Police Department. The investigation is required by county rules since the death occurred shortly after the man was arrested.
The man’s name has not been released yet as authorities are still contacting his family members to notify them of his death.

Casinos have the right to “trespass” certain patrons from the property. They can ban individuals for a fixed period of time or even indefinitely.
There are a variety of reasons why a casino would trespass a patron. Disorderly conduct, suspected cheating, or other disturbances can result in bans.
Furthermore, many casino guests have entered themselves into self-exclusion lists, usually due to problem gambling. At that point, casino security has a mandate to bar them from entry.
Anybody who violates their trespass status and returns to casino property risks arrest, fines, and potential jail time.
No reports have emerged to explain the banning of the individual who died in custody.
