A shooting at Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV left three dead early on Monday morning. The suspect was taken into custody after being injured in a shootout with a police officer, after taking the lives of three individuals who appear to have no personal connection to the suspect.
Grand Sierra Resort promotes itself as the #1 hotel in Reno and is a popular destination for those going to nicknamed “The Biggest Little City in the World” to gamble.
Although not well-known as a poker destination as the nearby Peppermill Resort, Grand Sierra Resort does have a poker room with cash games and weekly tournaments, and is popular with locals and casino tourists.
The shooting began at 7:25 a.m. on Monday and lasted for about five minutes before officers took control of the situation. The incident started in the valet parking area before spreading to the surrounding areas of the parking lot. Several other people were treated for minor injuries. In total, six people were struck by bullets.
One Reno shooting victim identified
One of the victims of the shooting was identified as Andrew Canepa from Ventura County, CA, who was a restaurant co-owner and father.
Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Correll shared a tribute to Canepa on X:
Me and my staff are heartbroken to hear about the tragic incident in Reno that took the life of Andrew Canepa, co-owner of Side Street Café in Newbury Park. Andrew was a kind soul, a dedicated business owner, and a loving father to his young son. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Side Street Café community during this incredibly difficult time. We will miss seeing his warm presence at the restaurant and are deeply saddened by this loss. I will share more on ways to support his family as that information becomes available.
Currently, there has been no information released about the shooting suspect.
Reno Mayor, Hillary Schieve stated how the incident could have been worse. She told the Associated Press:
It could have been much, much worse. We don’t know yet quite how it started or who was involved.
