New York has regulated online sports betting, but lacks local options for online poker and casinos. A recent ban on the sweepstakes poker model has reduced locals’ options even further. However, a multi-year effort by Sen. Joseph Addabbo to bring online gambling to the state continues.

Big changes are coming to the Empire State’s retail casino scene. Up until now, the casino gaming in the New York City area has been restricted to slots only, while residents had to go to upstate tribal casinos or cross the border to New Jersey for poker and other games.

Now, the selection process for three downstate casino resorts is almost complete. Most or all of these are likely to include Las Vegas-caliber poker rooms right in the boroughs of NYC.
