Spain has a thriving poker scene, centered on the Casino Barcelona, which hosts one of the most popular annual stops on the European Poker Tour.
Online poker is also legal, but the market is ring-fenced due to local laws. Fortunately, Spanish sites are able to share traffic with other ring-fenced European markets, namely France and Portugal. At one time, Italy was aiming to join that group, but it has not done so.
Spain has produced several poker celebrities, but none greater than superstar Adrian Mateos. He holds five WSOP bracelets, including one for the 2013 WSOP Europe Main Event. Another notable is Carlos Mortensen, a Hall of Famer whose popularity peaked in the boom years.
