A Houston poker player endured a hotel robbery in early August, and a local news station released footage of the incident on Wednesday. It serves as the latest stark reminder of the dangers surrounding social club poker in Texas.
The victim’s name has not been released, but police reports say two suspects robbed the man in the Galleria area of Houston on Aug. 1. They accosted him at his hotel at 5:40 a.m. and made off with whatever he had on his person. Police believe the robbers targeted and followed the poker player.
After the robbery, the suspects then entered a white Sedan driven by a third suspect and sped away.
The news report said the victim had won “a large sum of money” at a nearby card club. As for which card club, the story didn’t specify other than describing it as located “on Westheimer Road near Potomac Drive. Texas Card House Houston is located about one block from that intersection.
Safety Concerns At Texas Card Rooms
This robbery fits into a pattern of crimes committed in and around Texas card rooms. One comment on Reddit described the robbery as “completely standard.”
Worst city in America to play poker if you value safety at all.
Another posted on a thread related to security at Texas card rooms argued that hundreds of people play in the rooms without incident each week:
I mean… it happens in Texas. Do some googling and see which rooms are maybe notoriously sketchy, but hundreds of people are in and out of those rooms every week and robberies are not common. Way more robberies happen outside of casinos than you think
Texas card rooms are marketed and branded as social clubs. Very often, they’re located in strip malls right next door to other businesses. That’s a direct contrast with casinos, most of which have ample buffer space and dedicated security teams.
Without layers of security present in the manner of a casino, potential robbers can simply wait for players to leave and target them.
Combine that with high-stakes games — at least one Houston room deals as large as $100/$200 pot-limit Omaha — and a recipe for danger exists.
Even the card rooms that do have security don’t feature as robust a system as poker players would find at a national casino brand.
Incidents Through The Years
Over the years there have been several violent incidents at or around Texas card rooms. At least one man was shot. Other games have been robbed or cheated.
In April 2018, a man named Tom Steinbach was shot in the back outside a card house in Northwest Austin. He sustained life-threatening injuries but survived.
In 2022, there were multiple incidents at Legends Poker in East Houston. In one case, a security guard tackled a man carrying an AR-15 assault rifle who was trying to rob the room. Another case saw multiple shots fired in the poker room.
A more recent incident happened outside of the major cities. Three armed robbers broke into Johnny’s Social Card Club in Wichita Falls on Christmas Eve 2024.
Outside the scope of robberies or gun violence, there was a viral incident in May of this year. Former NFL star Adrian Peterson got into a fist fight at a Houston poker club with another player. The two then tried to parlay the fight into a formal boxing match.
