Kalshi is the brand at the forefront of the expansion of financial event contracts into areas like election betting and sports. The resulting “prediction markets” have taken the U.S. by storm, bringing what is effectively peer-to-peer betting to states where player-versus-house sports betting isn’t legal, or is only legal at retail.
Although once on shaky legal ground, Kalshi and its ilk appear to be getting a full-throated endorsement from new leadership at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission under the Trump administration. Even so, states are trying to push back on the business model, especially those in which the prediction markets are competing directly against state-regulated sportsbooks.
