Florida’s legal gambling scene consists of a mix of brick-and-mortar racinos and a tribal monopoly on other forms of gambling, held by the Seminole Tribe.

In-person poker is available at the racinos and at the Seminoles’ two Hard Rock Casinos in Hollywood and Tampa. There is no regulated online poker, though sweepstakes poker rooms serve the state.

For several years, Florida was in focus in sports betting legal news, due to a federal challenge to its hub-and-spoke interpretation of the Indian Gambling Regulatory Act. The state granted the Seminoles exclusivity over online sports betting statewide, using the logic that bets “take place” on tribal land as long as the servers are hosted there. That case ended with Florida sports betting intact, setting an important precedent for gaming tribes around the country as they look to move operations online.
