Unibet Open Returns to Malta This Fall After Two-Year Hiatus; Online Qualifiers Already Underway

Unibet recently announced the Unibet Open is heading back to Malta this fall and numerous online qualifiers are planned in the coming months.

Players around the world continue finding a busy tournament scene as more poker operators announce live events. Many of those come with numerous online qualifying opportunities as well and players are clamoring for the action.

Unibet is the latest to get in the act and recently announced that the Unibet Open is heading back to Malta this fall. The series has become one of the most popular events on the European poker calendar and runs Sept. 29 – Oct. 2 at the InterContinental Hotel in St. Julian’s.

This year marks the series’ 25th anniversary and the 15th season of the Unibet Open. The annual event also includes numerous opportunities to secure a seat online at Unibet.

“We’re really looking forward to our return trip to Malta in September,” Unibet Open head of events Nataly Sopacuaperu said in a news release.

Malta is one of our favorite destinations and our festivals there always have an amazing atmosphere. September is also the perfect time of year to visit Malta; it’s lovely weather and still warm enough to sit outside and soak up the sun.”

Earning a Unibet Open package online

Unibet Poker is ensuring that players have plenty of opportunities to qualify for the Main Event in Malta. Satellites began April 18 and run all summer in the lead-up to the tournament.

The last qualifier is set for Sept. 18, just 11 days before the tournament begins. Players can also buy in directly online through Sept. 21. Those are able to scoop up a €2,000 tournament package earn:

A look at the series

Plenty of poker action awaits those heading to Malta. The last festival, held in 2019, produced a record-breaking 327 entries for a €327,000 prize pool.

British player Alan Carr won the Main Event in 2019 for €53,400. More than 730 players turned up to compete throughout the series.

However, events in 2020 and 2021 took place online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers are hoping for an exciting series and a big turnout for the four-day festival’s return.

The Intercontinental Hotel is Malta’s largest five-star hotel and located in the same property as the tournament. Players will be just minutes away from all the Unibet Open action as well as cash games at Casino Malta.

The Intercontinental offers three swimming pools, a spa, fitness center, and private beach. All Unibet qualifiers earn full access to the welcome drinks and players party.

TOURNAMENT TIME: Winter Heats Up at Unibet with OSXV and $500,000 Guaranteed

The Unibert Online Series XV returns this month and runs Feb. 20 to March 6. Players will find $500,000 guaranteed across 105 events.

The big tournament action returns to Unibet this month with the Unibert Online Series XV running from Feb. 20 to March 6. Players will find $500,000 guaranteed across 105 events.

Beyond plenty of tournament play, the site has extra money up for grabs as well as some other promotions. Unibet is offering players plenty of action to wrap up the winter season.

Inside the series at Unibet

Unibet works to play to recreational online poker players and ally levels of bankrolls. That continues with UOS XV. The series offer High, Mid, Low, and Nano buy-in levels from €0.25 to €1,100 for most events.

A set of two-day championship events highlight the series on March 6. The schedule includes four Supermoon Bounty events on that date with the following buy-ins and guarantees:

€10 Low – €3,000
€1 Nano – €300

Unibet Online Series Offers Players Of All Levels, Bankrolls Some September Poker Action

The major tournament action returns to Unibet from Sept. 12-26. The Unibet Online Series XIII features €650,000 in overall guarantees across 105 events.

New Twitch Show ‘Seat Wide Open’ Ramps Up Poker Talk – And Fun

The team behind the new Twitch poker show "Seat Wide Open" are hoping to find a niche and offer something new in the poker media landscape.

In a packed poker media landscape, there’s no shortage of websites, publications, and video options for poker fans. The team behind the new Twitch poker show Seat Wide Open are hoping to find a niche and offer something new.

Riffld, the production company behind the industry series The Orbit, debuted the new show last week. The pilot featured hosts Des Duffy and Leigh Wiltshire interviewing Unibet ambassador Dara O’Kearney.

A unique aspect of the game is seeing each guest play online poker while chit chatting with the hosts. O’Kearney, who co-hosts The Chip Race podcast and is also an author, played a Unibet cash game session while discussing topics ranging from his play on the virtual felt to cryptocurrency to writing and blogging.

Duffy recently spoke with PokerScout about the show and how Riffld hopes to offer some twists to the typical poker production.

What to expect from the show

Seat Wide Open works in some additional features to add to the entertainment value. Viewers ride along as each week’s guest battles it out online.

That effort includes some multitasking for a wide ranging interview with Duffy and Wiltshire. The hosts also use some fun game show segments to add to turn up the fun.

Those features include: Stake a Shark, Sing a Long, Hot or Not, and Review a Flick. Each of these segments is meant to bring a television variety show feel. It’s a late night talk show mixed with a bit of The Gong Show and some Twitch poker thrown in.

On the poker side, viewers get a detailed insight into each player’s approach to the game. Each guest plays for 100 minutes with hole cards visible for viewers.

The show also keeps a leaderboard for show guests throughout the season. Producers hope this accomplishes two things:

Allowing viewers to see some varied thought processes and strategies across a full season.
Players are really working hard to post a great session to challenge at the top of the leaderboard.

“This absolutely lends itself to the competitive nature of poker players and it’ll be interesting to see what impact the leaderboard has on decision making live on the show,” Duffy says of the leaderboard.

“While all of this is going on, we are also conducting a deep interview with the guest through direct questions and some unique game show style segments, which will occasionally take the guest out of their comfort zone.

“There’s quite a mix of things going on, but they segued together well in our pilot episode with Dara O’Kearney and we’ve come out feeling confident that the format can find an audience. Plus, we had fun making it and that’s important to us too.”

A passion for poker

The show becomes the latest program for twitch.tv/poker. The Riffld team, which also includes Cardplayer Lifestyle blog founder Robbie Strazynski, hope to inform and entertain at the same time.

The team’s previous effort, The Orbit, received some nice buzz among players and fans. Seat Wide Open is meant to build on that momentum.

While entertainment is a big part of the show, the hosts bring plenty of industry knowledge.

Duffy formerly worked as head of product at SkyBet and in other roles with online gaming operators. He also co-founded the Amateur Poker Association and Tour with Wiltshire.

“Robbie, Leigh and I are recreational players with a great passion for poker,” Duffy says. “We come from a mix of backgrounds. I’ve worked for industry operators, for example. We do have a lot in common, particularly a wish to promote poker as the great social game that it is.”

“The Orbit was our first format and it had a great response from the industry. We evolved the format by adding a complimentary Orbit Extra, which was a live reaction show to what was discussed on the show. We’ve had some outstanding guests on both of those shows.”

Growing a poker channel

Seat Wide Open streams live each Thursday and fans can tune in to ask each guest questions. Hosts and viewers can inquire why certain hands were played in certain ways as well as other strategy questions. With the casual format, some of those questions may evolve outside the poker realm as well.

With so many operators and streamers on Twitch, Duffy, Wiltshire, and Strazynski hope the channel reaches all types of players.

“We see an opportunity for a more highly-produced show, with less emphasis on single operators or platforms,” Duffy says.”We want to showcase the best streamers, the best players and operators at any given time – whether through a news, game show, or live reporting format.

“Ultimately we’d like to build up a weekly schedule of shows and become a destination for viewers who want to add greater variation into what they watch. Everyone’s time is valuable these days and we just want to add a little more choice into the mix.”

O’Kearney believes the team is moving in the right direction and says he had a great time on the show.

“The show was tremendous fun,” he says. “Leigh and Des are great at keeping the chat flowing. I really enjoyed it and it reminded me how much fun live poker is.”

What to expect at Unibet

UOS XII offers plenty of action for players of all bankrolls. The series also incorporates the site’s Unibet Open, once again held online this year.

A few major Open events highlight the series. The two-day €1,100 Unibet Open on May 30 serves as the series’ main event. The event features a €200,000 guarantee.

Players with lower bankrolls will also find a €100 Unibet Open event the same day with a €50,000 guarantee.

€50 FRENZY: Padraig O’Neill Turns Satellite Entry Into €80K & Unibet Open Online Title

Padraig O'Neill recently took down the €1,100 Unibet Open Online.

The changing poker landscape has greatly affected the routines of players around the world. Pros and recreational players alike have adjusted by moving more of their poker action online.

Irish player Padraig O’Neill is one of those and has added even more online card playing to his schedule in recent months. That brought big dividends on Oct. 12 when he won the €1,100 Unibet Open Online for an €80,000 payday.

The 31-year-old would normally spend about three months of the year playing in live tournaments. Now with the major live tournament scene mostly shut down, that’s not possible.

Instead, O’Neill hits the virtual tables four or five nights a week with 99% of his action in multi-table tournaments. No doubt he’s hoping more big scores are heading his way.

Taking down a record event at Unibet Poker

The €1,100 event in October was part of the Unibet Online Series 9 and was the biggest tournament in the site’s history. The two-day tournament featured a €250,000 guarantee and ultimately produced 357 entries for a €406,350 prize pool.

For O’Neill, his big score came after locking up a seat in a €50 satellite and then running it up. It was quite a return on investment.

“This was my biggest score so far,” O’Neill told USPoker. “After swaps I’ve had one or two similar scores before, but this felt bigger. Closing out a big multi-table tournament always feels good.”

Luck seemed to be rolling his way as O’Neill particularly remembers handing a few players some coolers. Some excellent instincts at the final table also paid off.

“I folded one river versus the chip leader with eight players left, which was a tough spot,” he says. “They had set me all-in. I hadn’t seen him/her doing anything too crazy up to that point so folded a pretty big hand.

“I believe the guys over at The Chip Race podcast are doing one of their strategy pieces on it and I probably won’t like the results but will hopefully learn something.”

No matter how that particular hand would have turned out, O’Neill’s work certainly paid off.

Poker student to full-time pro

No stranger to poker success, O’Neill has almost $350,000 in live tournament winnings as well as significant online scores. He’s originally from the town of Drumlish, Ireland, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) northwest of Dublin.

Like many modern poker players, university life proved to be O’Neill’s foray into poker. He first played a couple times with a roommate in college. That evolved into a weekly appearance in a home game and a student union game the following year.

“I remember the home game going to two days a week at one stage and starting to find it boring,” he says, “but I must have snapped out of it, as here I am a decade later.”

While O’Neill hasn’t been able to play in a casino in recent months, pandemic poker has been especially good. However, feeling some real cards and chips in his hands would be great.

“With all the prize pools inflated, someone has to run well and fortunately I’ve been the lucky mid-stakes guy to do that,” he says. “I am looking forward to live poker returning. Getting out of the house in any capacity will be welcomed. I’ve attended the World Series of Poker since 2012 and hope to get back out there.”

That event has also been delayed until the fall and no new dates have been announced. But like many, O’Neill is ready for his return to Las Vegas.

Finding success at the Unibet virtual tables

Like many online platforms, Unibet has seen record turnouts and growing prize pools in recent months. The site caters to more recreational players and features many lower and mid-stakes offerings.

Players can even change their usernames as many as three times per day and poker tracking software is banned. The site tries to live up to its motto: “By players, for players.”

Players at Unibet won’t find just smaller-stakes action however. There are also some larger buy-in events as well during some of the platform’s major series. What does O’Neill like about playing at Unibet compared to some other sites?

First, the tournament structures are great, he says. The smaller fields are also nice for players looking to finish up an event at a reasonable time. O’Neill also likes how players are treated.

“I can also say from experience that the support has been top notch,” he says. “No waiting three months for an email response.”

Away from poker, O’Neill enjoys running, swimming, and cycling. Reading and numerous podcasts also take up much of his time. He has an interest in history and is also now engaged. What’s next for Unibet’s newest champion?

“I just want to keep motivated,” he says, “and will play in the few dozen MTT series we’ll undoubtedly have in the next few months.”

Similar results as the Unibet Open Online would be nice and should certainly serve as some motivation.

New Unibet Software Overhaul Improves Mobile Experience

Unibet has unveiled new software to greatly improve its mobile product.

Big series and big changes – that’s what’s been in the works from Unibet. Not only is the Unibet Online Series 9 (UOS9) underway with a €1 million guarantee, but the site also unveiled a new software experience.

A complete upgrade was made on Sept. 23 and Unibet officials hope players enjoy the changes. Not only will players find an improved software client, but the mobile experience has been ramped up as well.

The changes allow for numerous ways to get in the action as well as some nice tweaks to gameplay.

“The mobile experience has been taken to another level with full portrait mode support; not just in our mobile apps, but also mobile web,” a Kindred Group (Unibet corporate owner) poker team manager spokesman said.

“Whether you play on mobile, tablet or desktop, you’ll be met with a very similar user interface and the exact same features.”

New Unibet mobile advances allow multi-access capabilities

Unibet prides itself on being player friendly and catering to recreational players. The site bans poker tracking software and features lower buy-ins.

Micro events are run rake-free in the UOS9 and players can change their alias up to three times per day. That sense of pride in the player experience is also present when it comes to the software upgrade.

“A select group of customers have been involved in the entire design and testing process, from the very first mockups until testing of the final client due to be released on Tuesday,” a Unibet spokesman said.

“If there’s ever been a Unibet product release worthy of the tagline ‘By players, for players,’ this is it.”

The web client is now fully accessible on mobile devices. This offers an almost identical experience to the iPhone and Android apps.

All game types are now supported using this method and that can be important for some players. It’s now possible to play via mobile even in a country where poker applications have been removed from app stores.

Additional changes meant to improve and simplify gameplay

Unibet has also made some other mobile and cosmetic changes that should offer players more options. Users will find full portrait mode support in the lobby and player tables when using a mobile device or tablet.

This allows for a wider view and easier navigation.

Enjoy playing the same tournament regularly? Unibet has also now added a “favorites” feature in the multi-table tournament lobby. Players can favorite a tournament and easily filter to see the ones they like most.

The site has also added an estimated duration of each tournament in the lobby. This can be a nice feature for someone with limited time. A couple other added features include:

Colored bet amounts – Players can enable this option in the settings. Colored bet amounts make it easier, at a glance, to read the action at the table.
Table background color changes – When opening the settings from a table, it’s now possible to change the background for all tables or just one. Users can have different backgrounds for different kinds of tables.

UOS9 rolls on with plenty of action left on schedule

The UOS9 kicked off on Sept. 18 and runs through Oct. 11 with 133 events of all bankroll levels. Players will find three categories of tournament: Nano, Low, Mid, and High buy-in levels. That ranges from as small as €0.50 all the way up to €300.

Three two-day main events set for Oct. 2 highlight the series with the €300 Main Event guaranteeing €30,000. The €0.50 Nano version guarantees €400 and the €10 Low version guarantees €4,000.

Unibet is also bringing some of its traditional tournament brands to the series: the UK Tour and the Unibet Open. That includes the €1,100 Unibet Open Online, a two-day event with €250,000 guaranteed. Here’s a look at the complete schedule:

Unibet Launches UOS9 with $1 Million Guaranteed; New Software in the Works

Poker players have yet another online series to look forward to this week. The Unibet Online Series 9 kicks off Sept. 18 and runs through Oct. 11 with 133 events and an overall guarantee of €1 million.

The site caters to those who may not be looking for mega buy-in events and prefer some lower-stakes cash games and tournaments. Those looking to go a bit bigger, however, will also find some action.

The UOS9 is an example of that with Nano, Low, Mid, and High buy-in levels. That ranges from as small as €0.50 all the way up to €300.

Those looking for some lower buy-in options and plenty of fun may want to jump in the UOS9 action.

“We foster for our recreational players by running a quite large part of our tournaments in the lower buy-in range,” Kindred Group (Unibet’s corporate owner) poker tournament manager Leo Wagenius tells USPoker. “But of course we’re also running some weekly tournaments in the higher buy-in range, such as €50 to €200.”

Some highlights of the Unibet OS9 schedule

The UOS9 offers plenty of tournaments for players who prefer some fun with a bargain buy-in. Unibet goes out of its way to live up to its motto “By players, for players.”

When it comes to micro stakes action that means no rake. Unibet takes no fee for any tournaments with a buy-in of €1 or less.

Players in the UOS9 will find mostly No Limit Hold’em with a few Omaha events mixed in. There are also several bounty tournaments on the schedule, adding some extra excitement.

Key bullet points include three two-day main events set for Oct. 2 with the €300 Main Event guaranteeing €30,000. The €0.50 Nano version guarantees €400 and the €10 Low version guarantees €4,000.

Unibet is also including some of its traditional brands into the series: the UK Tour and the Unibet Open. The €1,100 Unibet Open Online, a two-day event with €250,000 guaranteed, should attract a nice field.

Proudly rec player friendly at Unibet

Catering to recreational and part-time players is a major part of the mindset at Unibet. Along with lower buy-ins and rake-free micro events, the site also has some other ways it caters to rec players.

Poker tracking software is banned and players can change their usernames up to three times a day. These present some obstacles for sharks looking to feast on less-experienced players.

Wagenius says communicating with players remains a big goal as well at Unibet.

“What really stands out is our close and straightforward communication with our customers,” he says. “We have a Unibet community where we listen to customer suggestions on a daily basis.”

The site also offers players the ability to create on-demand home game tournaments. All these events run rake free – a nice benefit to play with friends while social distancing during a pandemic.

“It’s really appreciated by customers, to be able to have small tournaments with friends and not pay for it,” Wagenius says.

“The entire poker team tries to make customers feel that they can actually impact where we take the product.”

Players have another nice event to look forward to during UOS9. The site plans to launch a complete software client facelift on Sept. 22. No word on the changes yet, but with its player-friendly approach, Unibet hopes the new software will be even more user friendly.
